Bachelor of Design Studies Curriculum

Design Studies is a rigorous course of studies for students who want to explore design in all of its possibilities. In order to ensure students are well grounded in design fundamentals, all students are required to complete core courses in

  • Design studios
  • Drawing and visual studies
  • Building technology
  • Liberal studies and design history

Students tailor their studies to their individual career directions by selecting one of the five specialties.  The curriculum also provides flexibility:

In each program, students have the option either to major or to concentrate in their specialty.
The Concentration consists of:

  • 4 core courses in the program of study
  • + 1 advanced interdisciplinary studio
  • + 2 "real world" practicums
  • + 1 capstone project

The Major consists of:

  • All the concentration requirements listed above
  • + 4 advanced courses in program of study

In all of the BDS programs, students round out their studies by completing open electives selected from the broad array of available courses. This allows students to customize their education as they explore their own passions and interests.

Design Studies graduates are putting design to work in such diverse careers as community advocacy, building, project management, design, entrepreneurship and organizational leadership. Click on the curriculum links above for any of the five specialties, and explore your own path.
