This studio provides exposure to basic skills and scale of landscape architectural design as an iterative practice utilizing a variety of sites and graphic methods. Students will explore site analysis and conceptual design ideas through mapping, diagramming and sketch problems, and with an output that explores various media, including artistic and technical drawing, freehand sketching and digital modes, plan renderings, as well as the correct use of labels, symbols and legends. Sites explored will be within the Boston metropolitan area, intesnsily urban, and which present a rich array of systems, including ecological and cultural ones. Students will learn to clearly communicate observations, site analysis, program analysis, and design alternatives to a variety of audiences. Techniques for effective presentations will also be explored. Weekly graphic exercises are expected; culminating in a final, portfolio-quality product featuring an existent, complex site design.
