The Practice Department is always looking for new community partners! Do you have an idea or inspiration for a design project that may benefit your organization? We'd love to hear. Read the following guidelines below and submit a completed project application form to: benjamin.peterson@the-bac.edu.

Q. Who are community partners?

A: Community partners are nonprofits, community organizations, neighborhood groups, and municipal agencies. We do not accept project proposals from individuals or for-profit organizations, although we welcome inquiries from designers interested in mentoring students through Gateway.

Q: I have an idea for a project, but I'm not sure that it's appropriate for Gateway. Who can I talk to?

A: Not a problem -- in fact, most Gateway projects are developed and formulated through ongoing conversation between the client and the Director of Gateway. To launch this discussion, interested parties should submit an initial RFP to benjamin.peterson@the-bac.edu. This form is used as a starting point, or working document, for future conversation and is designed to help clarify the project scope, objectives, and desired deliverables.

Q: What is the timeline for launching a Gateway Project?

A: Gateway projects are typically launched in September and ideally run for a full academic year (or two academic semesters: September - December, February - May). The project scope, objectives, and deliverables are established prior to the start of each semester in a Letter of Understanding.

At the beginning of each semester, the Practice Department hosts a Gateway Open House. Students are invited to learn more about the project offerings, speak with community partners, and submit an application to join the project of their choice. The Practice Department then reviews all applications, selects, and assigns students to teams based on demonstration of interest, academic standing, and recommendations from faculty and academic advisors.

Once teams have been assigned, Gateway projects officially begin!

Q: When is the deadline for submitting a project proposal?

A: Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit the initial RFP at least three months prior to the anticipated start date (May - June).

Q: What are typical Gateway project deliverables?

A: We offer a wide range of project planning and design services that allow clients to embark on fundraising campaigns, conduct research, or present a curated set of documents to a professional design firm. Services offered through Gateway may include, but are not limited to:

  • Feasibility studies
  • Working design proposals
  • Site and post-occupancy analysis
  • Design-build*
  • Code and zoning research
  • Project cost analysis
  • Master planning

*Certain services, such as stamped drawings and full set construction documents, must be performed by a licensed design professional.

Q: Is there a fee associated with Gateway projects?

A: Yes. Clients will be asked to provide a fee for services of $500 each semester to cover the operating costs associated with the project, including transportation, materials, and printing.
