Alternative Practice Options

In addition to pursuing work in a professional firm setting or joining a Gateway Project, students can explore alternative options for establishing Practice Hours and experience while studying at the BAC.  These include Prior Practice Learning, Independent Practice, Design Competitions, and Travel-based Hours.

Prior Practice Learning

What is Prior Practice Learning?
Students in the Architecture and Interior Design programs may transfer in Practice Hours for previously-completed design-related professional work.  The work must be of a design nature conducted under the direct supervision of a licensed design professional.

Students have one year from the date of matriculation to submit completed a Prior Practice Learning Application to the Practice Department.  Students may earn up to no more than half the number of Practice Hours needed to graduate from their degree program:

→ B.Arch/M.Arch:  Up to 2500 Practice Hours
→ BID:  Up to 1800 Practice Hours
→ MID: Up to 1500 Practice Hours

How do I apply for Prior Practice Learning Hours?
Students who wish to apply for Prior Practice Learning must:

  1. Contact the Practice Department at practice@the-bac.edu to schedule an initial appointment to discuss Prior Practice eligibility.
  2. Following the initial appointment, submit a completed Prior Practice Learning Application for each previous employer for which Practice Hours are petitioned.  Each employer must sign the Employer Certification section on the last page of the Prior Practice Learning Application.
  3. Obtain and submit a written statement on official company letterhead from each Prior Practice employer that verifies the length of employment and describes the work involved.
  4. Compile 8.5 x 11" graphic samples* that represent the work in which the student was involved.

*These examples must be clearly labeled and presented in an organized manner.  Students must indicate their specific role and the scope of their involvement in each project.  Additional notes or annotation should reflect upon particular challenges and learning experiences.  [Please note:  this documentation must be submitted separately from any portfolio submitted to the Admissions Office.]

Students may also be asked to follow up with additional appointments and/or submit additional work samples.  Students may approved for some, all, or none of the petitioned hours.  Granting Prior Practice Learning Hours is at the discretion of the Practice Department.

Independent Practice

Independent Practice refers to design-related projects or side-work that students undertake apart from working in a design firm. Students may petition for Practice Hours approval prior to the start of an Independent Practice project. To petition for prior approval, a student must:

  1. Find a project supervisor*; provide the supervisor's name and credentials.
  2. Download and complete the Independent Practice Application [PDF].
  3. Contact the Practice Department at practice@the-bac.edu or call 617.585.0145 to schedule a meeting with the Director of Student Services.
  4. Bring a hard copy of the completed Independent Practice Application and any other assisting materials to the scheduled meeting.
  5. Make a follow-up appointment with the Practice staff person at intervals during the semester, including a final assessment prior to submitting the approved hours for the Practice Report and Registration period.

*Students are required to find a supervisor for Independent Practice.  Supervisors must be design professionals who can oversee and vouch for the student's work.  If a student is having trouble identifying a supervisor, s/he will discuss this during the initial meeting with the Practice Department.

The project deliverables and hours will be developed and agreed upon by both the student and the Practice staff person assessing the Independent Practice Project.

Design Competition Hours

Practice Hours may be awarded for student participation in Design Competitions. Petitions for Design competitions must be submitted by a design team. Petitions submitted by individuals will not be considered. To petition for prior approval of Design Competition Hours, a team must:

  1. Download and complete the Design Competition Form [PDF].
  2. Prepare a design brief/competition abstract.
  3. Prepare a schedule or timeline for submission.
  4. Contact the Practice Department at practice@the-bac.edu or call 617.585.0145 to schedule a team meeting with the Director of Student Services.
  5. Bring a hard copy of the Design Competition Form and all required documents to the meeting.
  6. Make a team follow up appointment with the Practice staff person at intervals during the semester, including a final assessment prior to submitting the approved hours for the Practice Report and Registration period.

The project deliverables (including goals, outcomes, and timelines from conception to submission) and hours will be developed and agreed upon by the design team and the Practice staff person assessing the Design Competition petition.

Travel Hours

Students may petition for prior approval of Travel Hours. Travel experience must demonstrate significant relevance to the student's design education and must be based in a location outside the student's "normal routine" (Boston and/or home are not acceptable locations). To petition for prior approval, a student must:

  1. Download and complete the Travel Hours Petition [PDF].
  2. Contact the Practice Department at practice@the-bac.edu or call 617.585.0145 to schedule a meeting with the Director of Student Services.
  3. Bring a hard copy of the completed Travel Hours Petition and any relevant materials to the scheduled meeting, including a proposal that discusses the focus of study, supplemented by a travel itinerary that explicitly outlines how locations visited are intended to fulfill a student's self-directed research.
  4. Make a follow up appointment with the Practice staff person at intervals  during the semester, including a final assessment prior to submitting the approved hours for the Practice Report and Registration period.
