Curriculum

The Master of Interior Design degree is composed of three phases. Segment I, Foundation, helps the student develop visual design skills and acquire an understanding of basic design principles. Students work in a studio environment and progress from an interdisciplinary foundation studio to interior design-focused projects. By the third semester, the student should be working in the interior design industry and accumulating practice skills, reaching a total of 3,000 practice hours by the conclusion of the program. The work of Segment I culminates in a portfolio submitted to the faculty.

In Segment II, Integration, the student applies theoretical and contextual learning in advanced studios in interior design. Knowledge of sustainable design, building systems, lighting and furniture is acquired through coursework and concurrent practice, and is integrated in the studio sequence. A portfolio is submitted to the faculty at the conclusion of Segment II.

In Segment III, Synthesis, the student completes a guided, independent thesis. The two-semester thesis is typically a comprehensive project demonstrating the student's understanding and application of the interior design body of knowledge. For a full-time student, the program can be completed in 6 semesters.
