Throughout Summer Academy, students work in teams and individually with support and critique from their fellow students and studio instructors. Experimentation with materials, form building and form generation is encouraged. Design as a process of risk-taking and making is central to building fundamental skills as a designer. We encourage active participation in examining the world around us, through field work, field trips and projects at multiple scales. In the studio, students work on full-scale models, collage, site scale models and diagrams and explore the relationships between design for individuals, small groups of people and the broader public. In addition, the relationships between landscape, architecture and urban form are evident in many of the projects and explorations of Boston, our "city lab".
