Studio II is composed of returning BAC Summer Academy students, looking to build upon their previous experience and explore new concepts and processes of design practice. We travel throughout Boston discovering unique spatial and contextual conditions within the city from Boston Public Library and Copley Square to the Kennedy Greenway and the harbor waterfront and work in the BAC studio, where there are opportunities to share work with the first year Summer Academy students.
Studio II work focuses on a cumulative investigation of the foundational drawing convention of a section. A section is a drawing type which represents the spatial relationships exposed from a vertical ‘cut' through a building, landscape or other type of space. In their work, students seek to build an understanding of the principles of section, as well as its role in documenting, abstracting and reconstructing the spaces we inhabit. In the Design Studio II projects, the students work concurrently between elements of reality and abstraction and drawing and built form. Using different mediums including model making, drawing, collage and spatial sculpture, the students investigate and expand the ways they understand the creative potential of the design process through their own design work.
