Celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the BAC

The Boston Architectural College is pleased to welcome you in celebrating the 125th Anniversary of the College at Homecoming 2014. Throughout the past 125 years, the BAC's commitment to preparing students for professional practice in diverse and rapidly changing design workplaces has made the College integral to the evolution of the design professions, and to the history and future of the City of Boston.

Schedule of Events

Water Management and Monitoring by Jim Newman and John Gravelin
Time: 10:00am - 10:45am
Location: 951 Boylston Street
Cost: $15 per person
Many Bostonians don't realize the importance of groundwater and its role in supporting urban infrastructure. This lecture discusses the BAC's 'Green Alley' - a catalyst for ecological design in the heart of the city. Linnean Solutions was hired to monitor the performance of the alley. The monitoring data will be discussed to show how the Green Alley is functioning, and its greater environmental and resilience implications.

Discovering Passive House by Declan Keefe, Strategic Director at Placetailor

Time: 11:00am - 11:45am
Location: 951 Boylston Street
Cost: $15 per person
Passive House is an strict energy standard, but it doesn't have to be hard to achieve. This presentation will discuss how Placetailor stumbled upon the Passive House Standard, how it caused us to question everything, and why we never turned back. We will explore everything from the basics of the Passive House Standard to the details that make our buildings meet the metrics, to the business model that allows us to innovate.

Luncheon and State of the College by Acting President, Julia Halevy
Time: 12:00pm - 1:45-pm
Location: Cascieri Hall, 320 Newbury Street
Cost: $20 per person
Enjoy a delicious fall-themed lunch while networking with fellow alumni, past and present faculty, student leaders and the Boston design community. Acting President Julia Halevy will welcome you and present a State of the College address.

Designed in Boston by Don Brown
Time: 2:00pm - 3:30pm
Location: The Beehive
Cost: FREE
Don Brown will give a brief presentation on the history of the BAC. Purchase your copy of the newly published Designed in Boston: A Personal Journal-History of the Boston Architectural College. Donors of the book will receive their complimentary copy.

Back Bay Walking Tour
Time: 2:00pm - 3:30pm
Location: Meet at the 320 Newbury Street Entrance
Cost: $20 per person
Explore Back Bay with BAC faculty and alumni who helped shape the neighborhood. Hear about some of the new structures in the area and learn about historical sites as well.

BAC Alumni Gallery Exhibition Opening & Reception
Time: 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Location: McCormick Gallery, 320 Newbury Street
Cost: FREE
Join your colleagues and friends at a special opening reception for the Convergence Exhibition, highlighting the contributions and accomplishments of alumni. Enjoy complimentary food and drinks.

Homecoming Dinner and Alumni Awards Presentation
Time: 6:30pm
Location: Harvard Club of Boston, 374 Commonwealth Avenue
Cost: $80 per person
Spend a special night with your fellow alumni at the Harvard Club of Boston. Enjoy a plated three-course dinner, wine with dinner, unique entertainment, and we'll announce the winners of this year's alumni awards.

Other Happenings


The Library will open its doors to Memorial Library and showcase a selection of rare books, and a slideshow featuring archival documents and letters from Dean Cascieri in the Main Library.

Stop by the BAC Open House in the Fishbowl meeting room in 320 Newbury to learn more about the interesting programs on campus: Mentoring, Practice, Interior Architecture, Design Studies, and much more.

Sign the 125th Anniversary Social Media Wall and Instagram a photo of yourself or post on Facebook - the interactive wall will be our "yearbook" of our 125th year!

Visit Information Technology on the 4th floor - abuzz with students preparing for midterms. Check out the coder lab and see 3D printers at work.

View Convergence: Alumni Exhibition and see what our fabulous alumni have been working on - from industrial design to community service in Africa.
