How did classicism remain relevant for over two millennia, and how can it continue its relevance today? The essence of
classicism is a reverence for the archaic. It is relevant because it evolves to meet new programmatic challenges and to take advantage of new technologies and materials. This design talk focuses on the historical evolution of classical architecture relative to technological advancement and will demonstrate how the evolutionary process continues in the 21st century. While architectural classicism celebrates the highest achievements in artistry, it remains a practical art. This design talk examines the intersection of artistry and function, showing how classicism developed, as a response to basic problems of building construction and maintenance. The talk will highlight solutions that remain especially useful to architects and builders today.
