Stephen began his architectural career in Connecticut and later founded an architectural practice in Lowell, Massachusetts. While running his firm Stephen also led the Continuing Education Program at the Boston Architectural Center (now College), and in the early ‘80's was a driving force behind implementation of the BAC's Interior Design certificate program.

In 1982 Stephen left architectural practice to focus on real estate and ran the real estate groups of New England Life, Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, and Fidelity Investments. In 2004 he joined Pembroke Real Estate, an international real estate investment and development firm, as its President, and in 2005 he and his family relocated to London where he oversaw Pembroke's global expansion in Europe and Asia. Stephen stepped down as CEO in 2010 and is currently Chairman of Pembroke's Board of Directors and Chairman of the Seaport Company's, both Fidelity Investment companies. During his real estate career Stephen has directed the acquisition and development of more than 11 million square feet of office, residential, and retail space though out the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

Stephen holds undergraduate degrees from Missouri University and the University of Kansas and an MBA from Boston University. Stephen has served on a number of local and national real estate industry boards. He was a founding member of the Boston Chapter of the International Facility Management Association (IFMA), and is a past president of the Industrial Development and Research Council (IDRC - now CORENET) . He has been profiled for his work in industry magazines and in 1999 was the recipient of NAIOP's John D. MacArthur award as Boston's outstanding real estate executive of the year.

Upon his "semi-retirement' in 2010, Stephen and his wife Jill returned from London to the Boston area and now split their time between their homes in Rockport and Boston. In addition to his professional roles Stephen is also on the Board of Trustees of Rockport Music.
