Master of Architecture, Distance Track Curriculum

    Fall 2013 or Later

The M.Arch Distance Track academic curriculum is a sequence of prescribed courses taken in seven semesters over three and one-half years. Applicants who are admitted with advanced standing may complete the program in five or six semesters. Course work is accomplished in rigorous online exchanges in graphic, text, and audio formats, supplemented each semester by an intensive eight-day residency at the BAC.

The first two semesters constitute a ‘leveling year' consisting of courses in structures, architectural history, and intermediate level design studios that emphasize analysis and program as foundations for design. Semesters three and four are built around advanced studios that emphasize conceptual and technical design mastery, supported by courses in theory and research, urbanism, building technology and professional practice. At the end of semester four, students must pass a portfolio review before advancing to thesis. The final three semesters focus on thesis, with a thesis prep studio and a research and writing course in semester five, followed by investigation of an individual thesis topic in the final two semesters. Additional courses in professional practice round out the thesis experience. In addition, each semester includes a professional development course that provides a locus for reflection and critical thinking, where connections between the student's practice and academic experiences are made.
