CNC Routing

Subtractive Modelling

What is a CNC Router?
A CNC router is a computer conrolled 3-axis (x, y, z) digital fabrication tool used for cutting sheet stock such as plywood or foam. It can make 2D cuts similar to a laser cutter, but can also create 3D contours because the router blade can move in all dimensions. Our CNC machine has a 2'x4' bed size and can be used to produce furniture, signage, site models, pavilion scale projects, and much more. The CNC is located in Room 003 of 320 Newbury Street. The coding software, Partworks, is available on every workstation in Room 402.

CNC Manual
We have developed a CNC Manual to orient yourself to the logistics and workflow of CNC operation at the BAC. Please take the time to review the CNC manual—we will refer to it often!

Contact and Scheduling
The CNC machine is available by appointment to all BAC students and Faculty. Booking is scheduled via baccnc.10to8.com. All questions/concerns should be sent to cnc@the-bac.edu

Students and Faculty may book a meeting with a knowledgeable CNC Operator for 4 types of sessions:

  • Orientation (1 hour): To learn how to use the CNC machine.
  • Preparation (1–2 hours): To review my toolpaths or ask questions about my project, the software etc.
  • Cut (1–3 hours): To create the project. Prep meeting has been completed and project has been reviewed by CNC Operators or Computing Assistants. Appropriate materials are in hand.
  • Class orientation (for Faculty/Staff scheduling only)

To Book an Appointment
Choose one the four above appointment types at baccnc.10to8.com

Note: all students and faculty must schedule and attend a Prep Appointment prior to scheduling a Cut Appointment.

Operators/Hours of Operation
The CNC Router is operated by appointment only. You must schedule through our online booking system and you must be present in the CNC Lab for the duration of the job.
