The Howard F. Elkus Scholarship was established in 2017 in memory of Howard Elkus (1938–2017), who devotedly served The Boston Architectural College from 2009 until his passing in 2017, first as an overseer and then as a trustee in 2015. The Howard F. Elkus Scholarship provides financial aid to deserving financially disadvantaged and/or under-represented minority sutdents. Read more about the scholarship.
Howard Elkus, as well as the firm he co-founded, Elkus Manfredi Architects, were and are avid supporters of the College's mission to diversify the design professions by providing any student the opportunity to pursue his or her dreams and study design. Howard was a great champion of the BAC's students and hired many to work in his firm. This endowed scholarship provides financial aid to deserving financially disadvantaged and/or under-represented minority students.
Relative to the numbers of design professionals, the population of architects and designers of color is very small. The Boston Architectural College is committed to addressing this diversity problem at its root, and to providing excellence in design education through accessibility to diverse communities. The BAC's open admission policy directly reinforces the College's accessibility to professional education and demographic diversity.
Affordability is a critical component to the College's commitment to accessibility. However, the largest obstacle to enrollment reported by prospective new students at the BAC each year is affordability. Studying at the BAC is a financial investment in a student's future, and lack of significant personal funds should not prevent an inspired and motivated designer from pursuing his or her passion. Howard Elkus was passionately committed to taking on this challenge.
