Urban Planning and Summer Academy Fellows Program

The Urban Planning & Summer Academy Fellows Program offers a paid* summer position for City of Boston high school-aged residents who are curious about careers in urban planning and design. This pre-college program introduces students to urban planning and design with leading professionals and peers in the Boston area and beyond.

About the Fellows Program

As fellows, students are jointly enrolled in two programs that together are designed to support and enhance student learning— the Summer Academy Design Program plus the Urban Planning Fellows Program:

  • Urban Planning Fellows Program: This pre-professional training program prepares students for urban planning and urban design professional practice.
  • Summer Academy Design Program: This hands-on program is designed for high school students who are curious about starting a career in architecture, interior design and landscape design.

Who is Eligible to apply?

City of Boston residents, ages 14-18, who are currently enrolled in high school or the equivalent (such as a GRE program). 

This program was created by the Boston Architectural College with support from the Boston Planning & Development Agency to create opportunities for City of Boston high school students, and to support the continued diversification of the design and planning professions.

Program Details

Summer Academy students work on individual projects.

Program Duration: June 28th-Aug 5th 2022 
Program Times: Monday-Friday from 10:00AM -3:30PM EST

This is a paid fellowship that focuses on student learning about urban planning and design, including:

  • Free tuition for the Urban Planning Fellows and BAC Summer Academy Design Programs. Each eligible City of Boston student will receive a full scholarship.
  • Hourly pay of $ 14.25 (before taxes etc.) for 5 hours/day for 6 weeks (except July 4th)*
  • Lunch will be provided.
  • As graduates of the BAC Summer Academy Design Program, students will be eligible for a one-time $2000 scholarship towards one of the BAC's undergraduate programs. Students in 11th and 12th grade who complete the BAC Summer Academy Design Program are eligible to earn 1.5 college credits.

Registration Deadlines:

  • June 24, 2022—to enroll in the program and qualify for a paid urban planning fellow position
  • June 24, 2022—to enroll in the program as an unpaid urban planning fellow (tuition is still covered)

To qualify for the fellowship, students must:

Students have fun and laugh during a modeling project.
  • Live in the City of Boston. Program tuition and paid fellowships are funded by the City through the Boston Planning & Development Agency and the Department of Youth Engagement and Employment.
  • Be 14-18 years old.
  • Be enrolled in both the Urban Planning Fellows Program and the Summer Academy Design Program
  • Complete the required applications and paperwork
  • Attendance for the program is 6 weeks, 25-hours each week (20 hours July 4th week)
    • Students are required to attend the first 2 weeks of the program.
    • After the first two weeks, student fellows may miss up to one week of the final 4 weeks.
  • Follow the BAC's COVID Policies, including full vaccination or waiver with a booster (once eligible). For more information and updates, visit our COVID page.

What will Fellows receive?

As participants of the Urban Planning Fellows Program:

  • Paid fellowship (hourly pay)*
  • Tuition to the Urban Planning Fellows Program & Summer Academy Design Program
  • Daily Lunch
  • Urban Planning Fellows Certificate, with satisfactory completion of the program

As participants of the Summer Academy Design Program:

  • Summer Academy Program T-shirt
  • All necessary supplies
  • A Summer Academy Certificate with the completion of the program
  • Students in 11th and 12th grade who complete the BAC Summer Academy program earn 1.5 college credits, and are eligible for a $2,000 scholarship towards one of the BAC's undergraduate programs.

As participants of both:

  • Opportunities to learn about and use:
    • Digital fabrication
    • Design Software
  • BAC student accounts with full access to all digital assets via Cloud Canopy
