John Swift is a Principal with Buro Happold where he is the Director of the Boston Office, a member of the Global Board and is the Healthcare and Science Sector Leader.

He has over 25 years of experience in high performance building systems engineering design. A member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), he has extensive experience in the design and construction of institutional, commercial and public facilities that optimizes occupant health, safety and comfort- while minimizing energy and water usage.

His laboratory design experience has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), for whom he is an experienced ARRA Grant Peer Reviewer. He is an original participant in the development of the EPA’s Laboratories for the 21st Century Environmental Performance Criteria (EPC), and is currently working with I2SL on their decarbonization initiatives.

John is the past chair of ASHRAE Technical Committee TC 2.8 Building Environmental Impacts and Sustainability, and was the Senior Editor of the ASHRAE Green Guide, 2nd and 3rd Editions. Swift is also the past chair of the committee for the proposed ASHRAE Standard for Water Efficiency (SPC 191).

For 11 years, John served on the Board of Roxbury Youthworks and is currently active in supporting education initiatives for underserved youth through his work with the Berkshire Academy for Advanced Music Studies and Cobble Hill Farm Education and Rescue Center.
