Tatjana Crossley’s presentation explores how virtual reality reshapes the design and experience of space by functioning not just as a contemporary technical tool but as a cultural and psychological environment with a long historical lineage that influences perception, identity, and embodiment. Drawing from her forthcoming book and a range of her projects, she examines how designing immersion challenges traditional notions of place and subjectivity while opening possibilities for more engaged and multisensory architectural practices. Her lecture situates VR within the broader history of architectural theory, arguing that it extends core architectural concerns and enables new forms of spatial experience that can transform how we see, feel, and inhabit the world.

Join us on Tuesday, January 13 at 6PM EST  in Cascieri Hall or virtually for the first lecture of Spring 2026.

Tatjana Crossley is co-founding partner of ArchiTAG, an international architecture and research practice established in 2019, blending applied innovation in physical and virtual environments. Through ArchiTAG, she leads a diverse studio that integrates the experiential, cultural, and place-making aspects of design with cutting-edge technologies—from augmented and virtual reality to AI—cultivating new modes of perceiving and constructing inclusive, sensorially rich environments. The practice has developed several curatorial projects, and the work has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale and Lisbon Triennale. She also serves as Assistant Professor at Wentworth Institute of Technology, where her studio- and theory-based teaching emphasizes experimentation with design media and embodied approaches to architecture. Her research and coursework explore how architecture mediates perceptual experience, identity, and spatial subjectivity, particularly through immersive and virtual environments.

Tatjana’s scholarship extends into the sensorial and psychological aspects of immersive space. Her forthcoming book, Virtual Reality: Architecture, Culture and the Body (Routledge), investigates how virtual, architectural, and media environments shape spatial perception and cultural identity through a spatial-psychoanalytical lens. Before founding ArchiTAG, Tatjana earned a Ph.D. from the Architectural Association, an M.Arch II at Harvard Graduate School of Design, and a B.Arch from Rice University. She has international experience teaching at institutions such as the Architectural Association London, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Rhode Island School of Design, and has practiced at SOM in San Francisco.
