Stefan is an online Master of Architecture student entering his final semester, with plans to graduate in Fall 2025. Originally from Macedonia, he moved to the United States with his family to pursue his passion for architecture and further his education. Like many BAC graduate students, Stefan has balanced the demands of full-time work, family life, and advanced study—embodying the perseverance and dedication that define the BAC community.
Why did you decide to enroll at the BAC?
I decided to enroll at The Boston Architectural College (BAC) because of its unique opportunity to work and study full-time simultaneously. This model allows me to apply academic learning directly to professional practice, accelerating both my development and integration into the architectural field. I was also drawn to the chance to build connections with practitioners in the New England region, where I plan to establish my career. Additionally, having earned my Master of Architecture degree outside the United States, I sought a program that complements my existing architectural perspective while expanding my understanding of design principles and technical approaches relevant to my professional focus.
What do you feel makes the BAC unique?
What makes the BAC truly unique is the exceptional dedication of its instructors, who bring a deep passion for both teaching and the practice of architecture. Their ability to weave personal narratives and real-world experience into their lessons creates a learning environment that is both authentic and engaging. I also appreciated their approachable and positive demeanor—perhaps encouraged by the online format—which made interactions more open and accessible while maintaining a high level of academic and professional rigor.
What were your goals when you began your M.Arch studies, and how have they evolved?
My goals were to deepen my architectural knowledge, understand local design thinking, and gain the accreditation necessary to lead independent projects as a licensed architect. These goals have remained consistent throughout my studies; however, my experience at the BAC has enriched them. I am especially grateful for the opportunity to share my own perspectives while learning from the diverse viewpoints of my peers and instructors, which has broadened my understanding of design and strengthened my professional outlook.
Receiving a donor-funded scholarship is a meaningful achievement. Can you share how this financial support influenced your academic and personal journey?
Receiving the email announcing that I had been awarded the Steffian Bradley Architects Scholarship was a wonderful surprise and a meaningful acknowledgment of my academic commitment. This recognition has greatly motivated me to continue striving for excellence and reassured me that my efforts are valued within the academic and professional community.
The scholarship has also provided significant financial relief. Balancing full-time work, graduate studies, and parental responsibilities can be challenging, and this support has eased that burden, allowing me to focus more fully on my education.
I am deeply grateful to the donor for their generosity and belief in students like me. Since beginning my journey in the United States in 2019, I have faced many challenges, but this recognition has strengthened my confidence, reinforced my sense of belonging, and inspired me to keep pushing forward in my academic and professional growth.
What aspect of your studies do you enjoy the most?
I really enjoy engaging in dialogue with peers and instructors about our projects—especially with those who bring great depth and thoughtfulness to their work. I also appreciate the well-structured classes and the richness of the syllabus, as well as the accessibility and support of the instructors. Meeting new people and hearing how their life experiences shape their design perspectives is particularly inspiring.
In what ways do you feel the BAC has prepared you for professional and personal success after graduation?
The BAC has deepened my design approach and introduced processes and techniques that support quick and informed decision-making. I would especially highlight the meaningful cross-collaboration between the Studio and Building Systems courses. The interaction between these classes created a valuable and resourceful learning experience, bridging conceptual design with technical execution. While my prior experience had been primarily focused on residential projects, the exposure to more complex building typologies—and the opportunity to analyze the processes and decisions involved—significantly broadened my professional perspective and strengthened my confidence as a designer. In addition to this, learning to summarize and structure my decision-making process has proven helpful not only in my professional work but also in navigating challenges in my personal life.
What is your favorite memory of your time thus far at the BAC?
My favorite memory from my time at the BAC was my first studio class—Studio 3. It was more of a lasting experience than a moment, but anyway. This course set the trajectory for my studies by introducing the integration of master planning, landscape, and architecture. I have always been drawn to working on a larger scale, and this studio provided a fantastic opportunity to explore that interest. Designing for the historic Sing Sing Prison site allowed me to test my design hypotheses within a complex and meaningful context, blending spatial planning with cultural and environmental considerations. It was a defining experience that shaped my approach to architecture and reinforced my passion for multidisciplinary design thinking.
What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future? Grit—and probably a little more grit. I’ve learned that perseverance is essential in both design and life, so I plan to keep pushing forward with determination, curiosity, and a sense of humor. Building on what I’ve gained at the BAC, I hope to continue growing as a designer, taking on new challenges, and turning persistence into progress.
What advice would you give to future students who are considering studying at the BAC or applying for scholarships?
When I began my M.Arch studies, my goal was to enroll in a program that combined full-time professional experience with academic study. I understood that this path would require sacrifices, but I strongly believe that when investing your time and energy into something meaningful, it should be done with full commitment and the determination to perform at your best. This commitment was not only mine, but also shared by the people in my life—particularly my closest family. By performing well, I believe we honor their commitment too.
To future students, my advice is simple: when you commit, make it worth it. Believe in yourself and let your work speak for you. The BAC offers incredible opportunities to experiment, test ideas, and engage with inspiring peers and instructors—take full advantage of them. Along the way, you’ll learn to navigate challenges, stay focused, and discover your own rhythm of growth. The BAC recognizes and rewards dedication, and if you approach your studies with passion and persistence, your effort will not go unnoticed.
