BAC Announces New Director of Sustainable Design

Michael Fiorillo, BAC faculty member of over 10 years, takes on new role within School of Design Studies

The Boston Architectural College is pleased to announce that Michael Fiorillo, AIA, ASLA, has been appointed Director of Sustainable Design within the School of Design Studies.

Michael has been a member of the BAC faculty for over 10 years, overseeing the development of students from their first year through graduation. He has taught in many subject areas at the College, including foundation studios, design theory and inquiry, sustainable material assemblies, advanced studio workshops, site design, and more. He has worked as a graduate thesis advisor and graduate thesis panel member. This interdisciplinary experience has given him a knowledgeable perspective on both the BAC and design pedagogy.

"The imperative of sustainability is an opportunity to connect people with the environments and systems, natural and built, that they depend upon for survival. Design education should help students identify, investigate, understand and intervene on these systems and our healthy connections with them."

Michael has a Master of Architecture from Rhode Island School of Design and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Rutgers College. He founded and managed the architecture and landscape architecture firm, Fiorillo Architects, in Cambridge, MA. The firm focuses on connecting people to larger systems through sustainable solutions.

Michael previously worked at Payette Associates and Mikyoung Kim Design, where he worked on several noted projects including won the ChonGae Source Point Park in Seoul Korea which won the ASLA Professional Design Honor Award in 2009 and the Farrar Pond Residence in Lincoln MA which won the 2007 ASLA Professional Design Honor Award. He is a licensed Architect and Landscape Architect and is a member of the United States Green Building Council, the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association and the Society of Building Science Educators.

As Director, Michael takes leadership over graduate and undergraduate programs in sustainable design. The BAC offers both a Bachelor of Design Studies degree and Master of Design Studies degree specializing in sustainable design within the School of Design Studies.
