James “Jim” Callans is an online Master of Architecture student at Boston Architectural College (BAC) and a lifelong creator of curious things—ever since he first discovered pencils. Growing up in California and Hawaii, Jim developed a deep appreciation for diverse landscapes, inspiring his passion for the built environment.
Bridging sculpture, photography, and architecture, Jim’s work explores how materials and form shape both our environments and our inner lives. He experiments across mediums—from letterpress printing and skate-able structures to parametric design and digital-to-physical fabrication.
In addition to his studies, Jim currently works as a contract skatepark designer for Spohn Ranch Skateparks in Los Angeles, CA, and as a skatepark consultant for the Tony Hawk Foundation (also known as The Skatepark Project). His recent projects include the new design for the El Segundo skatepark and recent additions to the skateboard space at the West LA Courthouse plaza.
“Skaters are always using architecture in a unique way. It’s been interesting taking my skills as a skatepark designer to expand how I approach designing projects at the BAC.”
Jim credits the BAC’s experiential education model for helping him refine these connections between practice and theory. Working while studying means that he can immediately apply what he’s learning to real-world projects. He also actively participates in architecture competitions, both as an entrant and through projects in progress, continuing to expand his creative reach.
“The BAC was my #1 choice because it's intensive, and they’ve been doing the online program longer than anyone else. They know how to keep up to date with technology and accessibility—like with the BAC Cloud Lab.”
Always pushing creative boundaries, Jim continues to refine his craft through his studies and professional practice, exploring new opportunities for design and expression.
