This exhibit reveals Doshi’s emerging sense of architecture as a platform for living with dignity and joy and evolution. Doshi’s illustrious work spans over 60 years at multiple scales and exemplifies the crucial role architecture plays in connecting society and promoting wellbeing, a sense of identity, and communal spirit. This exhibit, along with complementary programming provided by the BAC, brings to the forefront the need for social, economic, gender, and racial diversity in architecture and allied design fields.

Architect Balkrishna Doshi’s life and work has moved like a steady stream of consciousness, drawing from context, climate, culture, and craft. Through serendipitous associations or chance encounters, the architect’s quest has remained rooted in multiplicities of being, thinking and manifesting. While Doshi’s architecture has been analyzed and viewed critically through the lenses of humanism, empathy, and experience – the exhibition uncovers his search for the intangible, explored through journeys across built projects and the contexts which made them possible. The exhibition is a journey through the architect-artist’s interior landscape, writ with ideas, outlined by the perpetual practice of introspection, recording, and questioning one’s location in the cosmos of life.

The exhibit was on display in the McCormick Gallery at the BAC from January 2023 to May 2023.

Professor Balkrishna Doshi on BAC Channel with Mahesh Daas

We welcome you to the inaugural episode of BAC Channel as President Daas speaks candidly with Balkrishna Doshi—India's first and only Pritzker prize winning architect, educator, guru, and a BAC 2021 honorary alumnus.

Watch as this unique conversation delves into a prodigious life and career spanning over nine decades— discussing design education, theory, rituals, space, architecture as well as the immense impact on our global structures and society during a global pandemic.

We were excited to launch BAC Channel with Mahesh Daas in Spring 2022. This series features conversations with thought leaders and innovators within design fields and related industries. Each episode aligns with the BAC’s critical mission to expand access to the design professions, increase awareness of the discipline, and advance design literacy within the public sphere.

Perception of Lightness Lecture by Exhibit Curator Khushnu Panthaki Hoof

As part of the 2022 Spring Lecture Series at the BAC, Khushnu Panthaki Hoof's talk covers aspects across Studio Sangath’s practice from architecture to exhibition design, curation to book design, and beyond. The constant effort has been to design for and with joy. Perception of lightness here refers to spatial experiences that make you feel light, joyful, calm, and immersed. This approach to architecture and design tries to seamlessly merge inside and outside, notion and reality, and silence and dialogue.
