Shaun O'Rourke Invited to Speak at ASLA Annual Meeting

Panelist on Optimizing Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in the Built Environment

Shaun O'Rourke, urban ecologist at The Boston Architectural College's School of Landscape Architecture, will present at this year's American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Annual Meeting and Expo on September 30 at the Phoenix Convention Center in a panel titled Optimizing Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in the Built Environment.

The ASLA Annual Meeting, Beyond Boundaries: Design Leadership & Community, will bring together more than 5,000 landscape architecture professionals from across the US and around the world in Phoenix, AZ, from September 28 to October 1 to connect with fellow professionals and earn up to 21 professional development hours through more than 135 education sessions with experts from the US and abroad.

Optimizing Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in the Built Environment will explore techniques that optimize the relationship between ecosystem services and the built environment. The complete list of panelists includes: Jim Holway, director, Western Lands and Communities at the Sonoran Institute; Isaac Brown, project manager at AECOM in San Francisco; Andrew Lavallee, principal at AECOM in New York City; and Shaun O'Rourke, urban ecologist at The Boston Architectural College.

The learning objectives of this education session, as stated by ASLA, are "learn current municipal and nonprofit initiatives to increase ecological services, become conversant in the field of biodiversity and ecosystem services optimization, and understand ways that landscape architects and planners can influence public policy."

Prior to joining the faculty of the School of Landscape Architecture at the BAC, O'Rourke worked at AECOM in New York City as an ecological designer, and at the United States Forest Service in Syracuse, New York. His research is focused on community based design and performance evaluation. He holds a MLA from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and a BS from the University of Vermont.
