Scholarships and Awards

The Boston Architectural College offers our talented and deserving students a number of scholarships, honors, and awards to help make paying for college easier for them and their families. Learn more about these opportunities below!

Am I Eligible? How Do I Apply?

The BAC will determine eligibility for each student for scholarships and awards; in many cases, you will be automatically considered and do not need to take further actions. We will reach out to you to let you know if there are next steps you need to take, such as writing an essay or submitting your portfolio.

Award Amount: $1,500
Established in 1972 by the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association, this scholarship helps an outstanding and deserving student with a partial tuition scholarship for a semester of study at the Boston Architectural College.
Scholarship Criteria
The following requirements must be met in order to qualify:

  • Students must be graduate or undergraduate students in the on-site Architecture, Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture or Design Studies programs
  • Students must have been enrolled at the BAC for at least 2 semesters & currently enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits
  • Students must be currently enrolled in their first Segment I studio
  • Students meeting the above criteria will be ranked on the basis of their academic standing among all eligible students and portfolio review scores

Students that meet these criteria are notified directly by the Scholarships & Awards Department once their status is confirmed with the Registrar's Office.
Application Requirements
The three highest-ranking students are invited for an interview with the Scholarships & Awards Committee.

Award Amount: $500
This prize is awarded twice a year to assist an outstanding student with the most impressive portfolio from the Segment I Portfolio Review. Students are nominated based on their Portfolio Review performance and then chosen by the Scholarships & Awards Committee.
Scholarship Criteria
The following requirements must be met in order to qualify for the Segment I Portfolio Award:

  • Student's portfolio must pass Segment I Portfolio Review with at least one recommendation to be considered for nomination for the award
  • Once recommended, student's portfolio must be reviewed and selected by a committee to determine who will be officially nominated for the award

Students that meet these criteria are notified directly by the Scholarships & Awards Department once their status is confirmed with the Education Department.
Application Requirements
Students who are eligible to participate must submit their BAC Segment I Portfolio.

Award Amount: $1,500
This scholarship is awarded twice a year to assist an outstanding student who is pre-thesis/pre-degree project and has completed two Segment II studios or its equivalent.
Scholarship Criteria
The following requirements must be met in order to qualify:

  • Student must be graduate or undergraduate students in the Architecture or Interior Architecture programs
  • Student must have completed two Segment II studios or its equivalent
  • Students must be pre-thesis or pre-degree project
  • Students must have been enrolled at the BAC for at least 2 semesters & currently enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits
  • Students meeting the above criteria will be ranked on the basis of their academic standing among all eligible students and portfolio review scores

Students that meet these criteria are notified directly by the Scholarships & Awards Department once their status is confirmed with the Registrar's Office.
Application Requirement

Award Amount: $1,000
This scholarship is awarded twice a year to assist an outstanding student enrolled in Thesis Seminar.
Scholarship Criteria
The following criteria must be met in order to qualify:

  • Student must be currently enrolled full-time at the BAC and in Thesis Seminar
  • Student must rank in the top 10 students based on GPA

Students that meet these criteria are notified directly by the Scholarships & Awards Department once their status is confirmed with the Registrar's Office.
Application Requirements
Students who are eligible to participate must submit their current BAC portfolio.

Award Amount: $1,500
This scholarship is awarded each fall to an outstanding female architecture student based on academic merit and need, through the generous support of Holly Cratsley, B.Arch '84 and Nashawtuc Architects, Inc.
Application Requirements
Recipients of the scholarship are selected and notified by the Office of Enrollment Management and Student Services.

Award Amount: Varies
Each year the BAC awards a total of $100,000 in Dean's Awards. This scholarship is a competitive award granted to incoming students who have demonstrated academic excellence. It is a partial scholarship that is renewable for the duration of a student's program at the BAC.
Application Requirements
Students are automatically considered for this award if they complete their application for admission to the BAC by the priority deadline. The dates for the priority application deadline are October 15 for the Spring semester and February 15 for the Fall semester.

Award Amount: Varies
This is an annual travel scholarship that sponsors a one-time scholarship for (1) current BAC student each year to attend lighting trade shows and education conferences, with destinations alternating between the Light + Building: International Trade Fair for Architecture and Technology, in Frankfurt, Germany and LightFair International (LFI) in the United States.
To be eligible, students must:

  • be enrolled full-time and in Segment II or III
  • be in good academic standing
  • have successfully completed a Lighting Design course at the BAC [TM7365/365, TM7369/369, CD105E/TM470 Lighting Design Workshop], TM471 Lighting the Environment or its equivalent at another institution

To apply, students must submit:

  • a short (no longer than 100 words) statement of why they are passionate about learning more about lighting and attending the conference
  • a rendering, a sample portfolio of lighting design work OR drawings to show their enthusiasm for lighting design

Award Amount: $1,000
The Howard F. Elkus Scholarship was established in 2017 by Elkus Manfredi Architects in memory of Howard Elkus (1938-2017), who devotedly served The Boston Architectural College from 2009 until his passing in 2017, first as an overseer and then as a trustee in 2015. He, as well as the firm he co-founded, Elkus Manfredi Architects, were and are avid supporters of the College's mission to diversify the design professions by providing any student the opportunity to pursue his or her dreams and study design. Howard was a great champion of the BAC's students and hired many to work in his firm. This scholarship provides financial aid to deserving financially disadvantaged and/or under-represented minority students.
Application Requirements
Recipients of the scholarship are selected and notified by the Office of Enrollment Management and Student Services.

Award Amount: $1,400
This scholarship was established to honor the memory of Bill Francisco, a BAC graduate and former faculty member. He was a dedicated student who graduated from the BAC in 2004 and went on to work as a Design Manager at Add Inc. The scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving Bachelor of Architecture student who is currently enrolled in or who has completed their first semester of Degree Project Studio.
Scholarship Criteria
The following requirements must be met in order to qualify for the Francisco Scholarship:

  • Student must be currently enrolled full-time in the Bachelor of Architecture program at the BAC
  • Student must be enrolled in their first semester of Degree Project Studio in the semester for which this scholarship is awarded
  • Student must have a GPA of 2.8 or higher
  • Student must demonstrate financial need

Application Requirements
Recipients of the scholarship are selected and notified by the Office of Enrollment Management and Student Services.

Award Amount: $1,400
This scholarship is awarded each fall to an outstanding student based on academic merit and need, in acknowledgement of Edward Heenan and his son, Edward Brett Heenan, in recognition of their love for the profession of architecture.
Scholarship Criteria
The following requirements must be met in order to qualify for the Heenan Scholarship:

  • Students must be enrolled full-time in their second year at the BAC
  • Students must have high financial need
  • Students must be in good academic standing

Application Requirements
Recipients of the scholarship are selected and notified by the Office of Enrollment Management and Student Services.

Award Amount: Varies
The Robert Houseman and Richard Kirkham Scholarship was established on April 27, 2005 by William Houseman, '10 (Hon.) and Kenneth Bloom with the intent of increasing diversity among the BAC students and alumni, and the participation of underrepresented segments of the general population in the design professions in general, and to serve as a model for the development of similar programs at other design schools.
Application Requirements
Recipients of the scholarship are selected and notified by the Office of Enrollment Management and Student Services.

Award Amount: Varies
The IPAL Fellowship Fund was established in 2016 for students participating in the IPAL (Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure) initiative at the BAC. IPAL Partner Firms make annual contributions to fund these scholarships. These contributions, in turn, are awarded to students employed at the partner firms.
Application Requirements
Recipients of the scholarship are selected and notified by the Office of Enrollment Management and Student Services.

Award Amount: $1,900
funded through the generosity of gifts made in memory of Emilio Arango, B.Arch '95, Herbert Glassman, Robert McCluskey, and Kelton Painchaud.
This scholarship is granted to meritorious students with demonstrated financial need with the goal of helping the BAC to attract and retain deserving and talented students.
Application Requirements
Recipients of the scholarship are selected and notified by the Office of Enrollment Management and Student Services.

Award Amount: $800 (1st place) $600 (2nd place)
Established in 1987, through the generosity of William E. Nast, this scholarship is awarded twice a year to assist two outstanding students with the most impressive portfolios from the Segment II Portfolio Review. Students are nominated based on their Portfolio Review performance and then chosen by the Scholarships & Awards Committee.
Scholarship Criteria
The following requirements must be met in order to qualify for the Nast Scholarship:

  • Student's portfolio must pass Segment II Portfolio Review with at least one recommendation to be considered for nomination for the award
  • Once recommended, student's portfolio must be reviewed and selected by a committee to determine who will be officially nominated for the award

Students that meet these criteria are notified directly by the Scholarships & Awards Department once their status is confirmed with the Education Department.
Application Requirements
Students who are eligible to participate must submit their BAC Segment II Portfolio.

Award Amount: $1,800
The Richard Painter Scholarship was established in 2001 with a gift from the Beacon Architectural Associates in honor of Richard Painter, a principal at Beacon Architectural Associates. Beacon principals recognize the demands of working and studying full-time, and hope the scholarship will inspire students to continue progression towards the completion of their program of study.
Scholarship Criteria
The following requirements must be met in order to qualify for the Painter Scholarship:

  • Students must be enrolled in any undergraduate program at the BAC
  • Students must have completed at least two semesters in the Concurrent Program at the time of application
  • Students must have applied for and received Financial Aid (can include Stafford Loans)
  • Students must be in good academic standing

Application Requirements
Students that meet these criteria are notified directly by the Scholarships & Awards Department and invited to submit a 250-500 word essay about their experiences balancing academics and practice at the BAC.

Award Amount: Varies
Established in 2005 from a gift from Ruth H. Pilling, the Pilling Scholarship is used to assist students with BAC related travel expenses. Ruth Pilling had several passions, including education, excelling in language, and studying through travel. All degree students registered for the chosen travel program will receive an equal distribution of the scholarship.
Scholarship Criteria
The following requirements must be met in order to qualify for the Pilling Scholarship:

  • Students must be enrolled in the studio/travel opportunity for which the scholarship has been allocated in the given semester

Application Process
None - students are automatically awarded if they meet the criteria above.

Award Amount: Two scholarships of $5,000 awarded annually
Established through the generosity of Robert Scagliotti, '69, '08 (Hon.) this scholarship is awarded each year to students in the Bachelor of Architecture program who have improved their community through volunteer work or changed careers to enter the field of architecture.
Scholarship Criteria
The following requirements must be met in order to qualify for the Scagliotti Scholarship:

  • Student must be currently enrolled full-time in the Bachelor of Architecture program at the BAC
  • Student must be currently maintaining a GPA of 2.8 or higher
  • Student must demonstrate financial need as defined by the Financial Aid Office

Application Requirements
Students that meet these criteria are notified directly by the Scholarships & Awards Department and invited to submit a 500 - 1,000 word essay expressing their desire to have a career in architecture. Preference will be given to students who have improved their community through volunteer work and/or have changed careers to enter the field of Architecture. If applicable, please address this in your essay submission as well.

Award Amount: $2,600
The Steffian Bradley Architects Scholarship Fund in Memory of Peter Steffian and Joseph "Tony" Bradley was established in 1978 through the generosity of Steffian Bradley Architects and is awarded twice a year to help an outstanding and deserving student with a partial tuition scholarship for a semester of study at the Boston Architectural College. The fund, formerly known as the SBA/Steffian Bradley Associates Inc. Scholarship Fund in memory of Joseph M. Bradley, was revised in 2013 to honor both Peter Steffian '07 (Hon.) and Joseph M. Bradley.
Scholarship Criteria
The following requirements must be met in order to qualify for the Steffian Bradley Architects Scholarship:
Students must be graduate or undergraduate students in the Architecture or Interior Architecture programs

  • Students must have passed the Segment I Portfolio Review
  • Students must be currently enrolled in their first C-Level/Segment II Studio or its equivalent
  • Students must have been enrolled at the BAC for at least 2 semesters & currently enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits
  • Students meeting the above criteria will be ranked on the basis of their academic standing among all eligible students and portfolio review scores

Students that meet these criteria are notified directly by the Scholarships & Awards Department once their status is confirmed with the Registrar's Office.

Award Amount: $4,500
Each year, the BAC and Anthony Tappé provide one scholarship for an exciting study abroad program outside Paris, France. Selection is based on academic and practice standing, with preference given to advanced students of Architecture with excellent academic records and portfolio. During the past 80 years, the Fontainebleau Schools have brought together different artistic disciplines in order to explore new ways of seeing, thinking and making architecture. Scholarship Criteria
The following requirements must be met in order to qualify for the Fontainebleau Scholarship:

  • Students must be enrolled in coursework in the Architecture Degree Program (preference given to advanced students; Segment II or higher).
  • Students must be maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress for their Degree Program, as well as for Financial Aid
  • Students must have demonstrated leadership skills and good citizenship as a BAC student

Application Requirements
To be considered for the scholarship, students must submit the following materials:

  • A current portfolio
  • A sketchbook
  • An essay of no more than 500 words discussing how you would make a good ambassador for the Boston Architectural College and how your participation in the Fontainebleau Architecture Program supports your educational goals.

Students should submit all application materials to the front desk of the Student Services office on 951 Boylston Street. All submissions should include your name and the name of the scholarship.

Architects League of Northern New Jersey Scholarships for residents of Northern New Jersey enrolled in an accredited school studying architecture, landscape architecture, interior architecture, or historic preservation.

AIA Rhode Island
Scholarships for residents of Rhode Island enrolled in an accredited school studying architecture, landscape architecture, interior architecture, or historic preservation.


AIA Site Preservation Grant
The Site Preservation Grant is intended to fund projects that uphold the AIA’s mission to preserve and protect the world’s archaeological heritage for future generations. The goal of the grant, which carries a maximum award of $15,000, is to enhance global preservation efforts and promote awareness of the need to protect threatened archaeological sites.


The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS)

American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Worldstudio Scholarship
The AIGA Worldstudio Scholarships aim to increase diversity in the design profession by creating equitable opportunities for the next generation of creative talent. Scholarships are awarded annually to students enrolled at colleges and universities in the U.S. who demonstrate a commitment to positive social change, environmental responsibility, and cultural awareness through the practice of visual communication, including photography, illustration, or graphic design.


American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Foundation

Archaeological Institute of America Grants and Awards
The AIA offers a variety of scholarships, fellowships, and grants for excavation, research, publication, and site preservation.


Association For Women In Architecture and Design
The Association for Women in Architecture Foundation offers annual cash awards to women students studying Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design and/or Land Planning, Interior Design, Historic Preservation or Environmental Design leading to a college degree. Applicants must be female residents of California.

The Charles E. Peterson Prize
Every year Historic American Building Survey/Historic American Engineering Record (HABS/HAER) offers students and practitioners employment and professional training opportunities through its summer recording program, competitions, and internships and fellowships. Participants take with them a greater awareness and knowledge of historic buildings, structures, and sites, as well as the importance of "preservation through documentation."


CINTAS Fellowship in Architecture and Design
Since 1963, the CINTAS Foundation has awarded over 21 fellowships in architecture. In addition to supporting Cuban artists, many early in their careers, the CINTAS Foundation also maintains a growing collection of works by past awardees and other esteemed Cuban artists. For the purpose of historical value and documentation, architectural award recipients are encouraged to submit architectural drawings (i.e., representative samples of their work) to be added to the CINTAS Fellows Collection after the grant period. Creative artists and architects of Cuban citizenship or direct lineage (having a Cuban parent or grandparent) can apply.


Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s  Scholarships
For more than three decades the CBCF in partnership with CBC Spouses has awarded scholarships to talented and deserving students. Each year, we award more than 300 scholarships to students that demonstrate leadership ability through exemplary community service and academic talent. Our scholarship programs support current or upcoming college students across a variety of disciplines.


Conservation and Heritage Management Award
The Award is open to any individuals, institutions, or organizations, public or private, who merit recognition for their contributions to the preservation of our archaeological heritage. Eligibility is not restricted to members of the AIA or to U.S. citizens.


Elizabeth Bartman Museum Internship and Scholarship Conservation and Heritage Management Award
A scholarship established in honor of AIA Honorary President Elizabeth Bartman to assist advanced undergraduates, graduate students, or those who have recently completed a master’s degree with the expenses associated with participating in a museum internship either in the United States or abroad.


The Garden Club Federation of Maine
The GCFM currently has several scholarships available to undergraduate and graduate students interested or currently majoring in landscape design and other gardening related fields.


Gensler
Gensler is committed to the education of emerging design talent. The firm has awarded nearly $260,000 in academic scholarships to students and graduates over the last 19 years. Gensler offers two U.S. scholarship opportunities annually.


Graduate Student Paper Award - Archaeological Institute of America
Eligible students are predoctoral students in any discipline related to archaeology who have had a paper accepted by the Program for the Annual Meeting Committee for presentation at the Annual Meeting of the AIA and who have checked the box labeled “Graduate student paper award” on the Open Session Submission Form.


Graduate Student Travel Award
Graduate Student Travel Grants are meant to assist graduate students who are presenting papers at the Archaeological Institute of America Annual Meeting with their travel expenses. Graduate students must have indicated interest on their abstract submissions.


Hip Hop Architecture Scholarship
Michael Ford’s $10,000.00 Hip Hop Architecture Scholarship awards $2,500 per year for four years, totaling $10,000.00 to a minority high school senior who accepted into a 4 year college or university to study architecture. Recipients will be contacted to reapply for the scholarship when entering graduate school.


The Horticultural Research Institute Endowment Fund
The Horticultural Research Institute (HRI) was established in 1962 to support and promote horticultural research that benefits the nursery and landscape industry. HRI is regarded as the research affiliate of the American Nursery & Landscape Association (ANLA). The HRI Endowment fund is composed of several scholarship funds that aid students who are seeking a lifelong career in horticulture.


Houzz Scholarship Programs
The Houzz Scholarship Program, launched in 2016, supports the next generation of students studying architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, construction management, or skilled trades. Houzz has five scholarship programs: Women in Architecture Scholarship, Residential Design Scholarship, Sustainable Residential Design Scholarship, Residential Construction Management Scholarship, and the Skilled Trades Residential Construction Scholarship.


Jane C. Waldbaum Archaeological Field School Scholarship
This scholarship is intended to help students who are planning to participate in archaeological field work for the first time. Students majoring in archaeology or related disciplines are especially encouraged to apply. The Scholarship Fund provides $1000 to help pay expenses associated with participation in an archaeological field work project (minimum stay one month/4 weeks). The Waldbaum Scholarship will be awarded to junior and senior undergraduates and first-year graduate students only.


The Kate Neal Kinley Memorial Fellowship
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, College of Fine and Applied Arts.


The MNLA Foundation for Educational Excellence Scholarship Program 
To be eligible, applicant's major must be in a course of study in Horticulture or related sciences, they must be a resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for a minimum of one year prior to submitting an application, and completed applications must be submitted by March 31st of the Award Year. National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) 
Founders' Scholarship Foundation: "Each year we are pleased to award over $25,000 to worthy recipients in construction-related programs. Award amounts range from $1,000 to $2,000. Scholarship applications must be postmarked by March 15th of each year to qualify for competition. Applications will be available in October."


NEWH Scholarships 
NEWH has several scholarships that are open to Interior Design students.


The Plan NH Fellowship Program
"Plan NH is a non-profit organization which provides a forum for architects, engineers, developers, contractors, building officials, bankers, and legislators to communicate about issues that affect the built environment. Fellowship candidates must be currently enrolled in an accredited program at a New England college or university that leads to a degree in architecture, interior design..." SmithGroup Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Scholarship
The SmithGroup Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Scholarship Program supports and mentors students from historically underrepresented demographics in architecture, interior design, planning, landscape architecture, and engineering. The program’s mission is to provide these students with the opportunity to attain their professional goals while advancing the architecture/engineering/construction (AEC) industry and improving the built environment.


Society for American Archaeology Scholarships and Grants
Through its scholarship programs, SAA works to increase diversity in the field of archaeology, and help support the future of the field.


The Tradewell Fellowship
Named in honor of the late Gary Tradewell, a former Vice President and Medical Planner of WHR Architects, the Tradewell Fellowship was created to build careers of aspiring healthcare architects.


Women in Archeology Adult Field School ScholarshipThe Tradewell Fellowship
Women 18 and older, who are currently enrolled in college or graduate school and who are majoring, or planning to major, in archaeology, anthropology, or a related field (e.g., cultural studies, museum studies, geography, historic preservation, etc.) are eligible to apply for scholarship support.

The Dream.US
National Scholarship applications are open to undocumented immigrant students with or without DACA or TPS who came to the U.S. before the age of 16 and before Nov. 1, 2017. Opportunity Scholarship applications are for undocumented students who live in states where they effectively have no access to college – either because they face paying out-of-state tuition or because their state will simply not admit them into its universities.


Golden Door Scholars
Golden Door Scholars provides DACA and undocumented students with the financial aid and support needed to invest in their education and define their futures.


Immigrants Rising DACA Students

Unafraid Scholarship
The Unafraid Scholarship was founded in order to provide financial support for students who are not eligible to receive financial aid from the federal government due to their immigration status. It is a one-time grant made payable directly to the College. Applicants can reapply annually.
